How to design Microstrip Patch Antenna: Step by Step beginners guide 2021

When you are new in Antenna world we all face some basic problem of Microstrip Patch antenna designing, most of us faces many problem, We don’t know how to design a antenna properly. Today i am going to show you how to design Microstrip Patch antenna in CST.

Basics of Antenna design

There are 3 parts of a Microstrip Patch Antenna which we have to design, They are given below:

Substrate

Substrate is generally a base or container on which microstrip patch (metallic sheet) antenna is fabricated and it plays an important role in microstrip antenna functioning. The substrate in microstrip antennas is principally needed for the mechanical support of the antenna. To provide this support, the substrate should consist of a dielectric material, which may affect the electrical performance of the antenna, circuits and transmission line. A substrate must, therefore, simultaneously satisfy the electrical and mechanical requirements, which is sometimes difficult to meet.

Ground

As the name indicates that the antenna ground plane of an antenna acts as a simulated ground. It is found that for a monopole antenna like a quarter wavelength vertical, the ground acts as a plane to reflect the radio waves so that an image of the top half of the antenna is seen in the Earth. It is possible to simulate this function by replacing the real earth with a conducting plane. To function as an antenna ground plane, the conducting surface must extend for least a quarter wavelength from the base of the antenna.

Patch

A patch antenna is a type of radio antenna with a low profile, which can be mounted on a flat surface. It consists of a planar rectangular, circular, triangular, or any geometrical sheet or “patch” of metal, mounted over a larger sheet of metal called a ground plane. They are the original type of microstrip antenna described by Howell in 1972;[1] the two metal sheets together form a resonant piece of microstriptransmission line with a length of approximately one-half wavelength of the radio waves.

Antenna Parameter selection

First you have to decide in which frequency you want to operate your antenna , then you have to calculate the value with respect to the operating frequency. There are some antenna calculator in online , you can also calculate them from there.
